Anwan Glover aka Big G

I just got off work and as I do everyday, I checked the local section of The Washington Post. I always pay extra attention to the crime section and tonight/morning, I read an article that honestly made me sad.

Anwan Glover aka "Big G" may be best known as "Slim Charles", the character he portrayed on the realest tv show ever, The Wire. Locally, or in the DC area, he's known as the lead singer and frontman for staple DC go-go all-stars, Backyard Band. Well, his teenage son was the unfortunate victim of a shooting at a party out in PG this past weekend. As one of Bog G's fans, I mean no disrespect when I say that my man can't catch a break.

Back in '99, if I'm not mistaken, the same year he won "Go-Go Artist of the Year", he was shot on-stage during a show - but survived miraculously. Over the next decade, he recorded more classic Backayard Band hits, perfecting his signature ad-libs and voice. He also displayed his talents acting alongside Idris Elba and Wood Harris. Four years ago his younger brother was murdered uptown, just blocks sways from Howard University.

His son is expected to survive.

I met Big G in passing a few years back while I was working in Georgetown. We dapped, he handed me a flyer, and I held my head high because I'd met one of my local heroes.

My prayers go out to Anwan Glover and his family. Hold your head.

My prayers also go out to my mother (like I'ma plug her name) and her friend Jay and his family.

HOT IN THE STREETS!!!! Wale ft. Rick Ross & Jeremih - That Way

Kobe is a Barce fan...(Sucks Bro)

Kobe Bryant came home to the east coase, D.C. specifically (DMV!) to attend the Man-U vs. Barce game this past Saturday. As much as I love the mamba, I gotta keep it real and admit that I'm a little dissapointed with my man's choice of team this evening. I was in attendance, (Glory Glory!) losing my voice, watching the Red Devils cruise to victory behind a game winning lob from old-ass-lifer Michael Owen. During halftime Kobe was on the pitch, hitting PK's and presented the victors, MAN-U, with a trophy and the end as well. He also, not so subtly, was wearing a Turkish Airlines shirt while he did so. (Say it aint so Kobe!!!!) Ahh it was a good game, and this is my first drunk post! Shout out to Mark Zuckerberg! Peep me and my boy Mwiti below, who owes me a whole $20, gettin it in before the match.

Man. U vs. Barcelona in D.C.

This Saturday D.C. hosts the first rematch of last seasons Champions League final. Hopefully the Red Devils will come through with a dub on US soil. Me and my girl plan on wearing more red than Wayne to this event. Man U has been making fools out of MLS teams over the past month. Even last night they just embarrassed the MLS All-Stars 4-0. 4-0! With Messi stayin home this trip and United's current momentum, I think a win this saturday is definitely on the menu. I'll be there, get at me if youll be there too!

Drinks Up!

Light, fizzy, fruity...good! Yellow Tail Moscato is the best, affordable, summer wine. Be careful, this goes down easy, and if you're like me, a lush, you could probably punish a BIG bottle of this stuff yourself. They dont sell it everywhere, and it isn't advertised on Yellow Tail's website, so if you come across it and a Beer & Wine store near you, do yourself a favor and grab like five. Seriously.

I just copped a pair of these the other day. Very nice (Borat voice).

Throwback: '98 Mase

"I cant get mad that you look at me, cause on the real...look at me."

Mase's flow and delivery were underappreciated at the time, although I always considered him one of the illest. He was a definitive part of my favortie era of rap (1996-1999). He carried  the torch for Puffy's Biggie-less Bad Boy Records and became their franchise artist. Mase smiled, danced, and kept it gangsta all at the same time. Like he said, "I was Murda, P. Diddy made me pretty / Did it for the money, now can you get with me?" He made songs for the fellas - "Take What's Yours" featuring a relatively unknown DMX. He made songs for the ladies "Love U So" and he also made songs for the family "Feel So Good". What I cant ignore is the unfortunate fact that all these songs came from his first album, Harlem World, and that Mase officially falls into the one-album-wonder category. But instead of going in on him for his post Bad Boy slip-ups and his attempt to cash in on Christianity, or his stint with G-Unit, I'll just remember Mase for who he was back in 1998: jiggy-ass, cheesin-ass, half-retarted lookin' beast on the mic.

Murray!

"Excuse me miss Dionne. My street slang is a valid form of expression, though some of the feminine pronouns do have mocking, but no necessarily a misogonistic undertone."

Time Travel with Sole Provider

I got this book from my mother for my 17th birthday. As much as I loved it and she enjoyed watching me pour through the pages, this gift ended up back-firing incredibly when it increased my desire NEED for more shoes. Writer and Basketball x Hip-Hop culture aficionado Scoop Jackson provides the reader with in-depth backstories on each iconic basketball shoe Nike released from the 70’s-2000’s. The one-of-a-kind pictures capture the essence of each decade, especially the 1990’s – undoubtedly sneakers’ greatest decade.

First A.I. now D-Will?

This may be the most foolishly American thing I’ve ever said (written) but I am not the slightest bit excited about possibly seeing an American All-Star dunking on Eurasians while wearing one of those ugly ass jerseys covered in team sponsorships.  David Stern, a man who I’ve always given a personal G-pass (even after the mandatory dress code) and the NBAPA have got to sign a new CBA, A.S.A.P. (damn). Understand, the main difference between the NBA and NFL lockouts is that there are foreigners with fat bank-rolls ready to pay these boys heavy guap  just to play for their squads for one year. NFL players don’t have the same luxury, I don’t see Drew Brees heading to Serbia to suit up in a Kragujevac Wild Boars jersey any time soon. Deron Williams’ deal in Turkey is good for his pockets but not good for the leagues legitimacy. More players will soon jump ship, or get on a ship, to play for more money at a lower skill-level, ruining the integrity of our brand of hoops. Young guns Brandon Jennings and Ricky Rubio have already given the NBA an unapologetic middle finger with their pre-NBA overseas ventures. What once was thought to be the NBA graveyard (A.I.) is soon to become the new hotness for players holding out for larger NBA contracts, skipping their mandatory year of college or waiting for the end of an unfortunate player lockout.

Sorry 4 The Wait!!! Tunechi's Back!!!!

Mixtape Weezy is back with "Sorry 4 The Wait" his pre-quel to the highly anticipated Carter 4 which is slated to drop this August. Wayne has a knack for coming hard as hell on these mixtapes, I hope this one can match 2009's "No Ceilings".

If Caylee Anthony had been black, would you know her name?

The gist of this article can be found in the title. Have you ever heard of Banita Jacks? I have. I also know about her daughters, the four black girls named in the article who were killed by their mother, Ms. Jacks, in a dilapidated apartment in Southeast Washington, D.C. Where was the nationwide media coverage to bring them justice?
